What You Need to Know

Called everything from a “BP oil spill on land” to a “mini Chernobyl,” the Porter Ranch gas leak, still ongoing, has caused untold damage to the Porter Ranch community and surrounding San Fernando Valley area. Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate their homes, while thousands of others have suffered worrisome health problems as well as emotional trauma. The Mandell Law Firm agrees with most sitting city council members in concluding that the Porter Ranch gas leak is the result of gross negligence on the part of Southern California Gas Company and is committed to assisting residents to help them find comfort and redress in this ongoing disaster.

While the gas leak is invisible to the naked eye, the infrared video below, shot by Earthworks, demonstrates dramatically the magnitude of the ongoing leak and amount of toxic methane, benzene, and other harmful gases are being pumped into the air in and around the Porter Ranch community.

The suffering of Porter Ranch residents as a result of the Aliso Canyon gas leak is simply unconscionable. Many residents are reporting symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, vomiting, nosebleeds, headaches and body pain, and many more have already been forced to uproot and leave their homes. Even residents’ pets are suffering from health issues. Meanwhile, the gas leak, which has already released the emissions of the equivalent of 160,000 cars, has not been stopped. Leakage is drifting into the surrounding area and property values in and around Porter Ranch are rapidly dropping. In short, it’s a disaster and has been declared so by Governor Jerry Brown, and there appears to be no end in sight.

Southern California Gas Company has displayed astonishing apathy in its mishandling of the leak, from failing to stop the leak from failing to be transparent about the effects of the leak. Southern California Gas must be held accountable. The Mandell Law Firm aims to encourage the Los Angeles Superior Court to require that SoCal Gas release proper information about the gas leak and the potential health risks involved by exposure to it. Additionally, Mandell Law is working to seek damages on behalf of the residents of Porter Ranch and surrounding areas.

Porter Ranch Gas Leak is Bigger than Just Porter Ranch

The Aliso Canyon gas leak is of massive proportions and has little precedent in California. Spewing methane and other toxins since October, the gas well blowout has leaked untold levels of toxic fumes into the surrounding area. Methane, a greenhouse gas more potent than carbon dioxide, is invisible, odorless, and can travel far – making it extremely dangerous in large doses. Experts have stated that the leak, in terms of negative environmental impact, has contributed the equivalent of nearly 3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide to the greenhouse effect.

Residents in and around the area are finding themselves sick much of the time. A large percentage of them have found they have no choice but to flee. In their absence, the value of their properties has decreased dramatically. Meanwhile, Southern California Gas is denying that the fumes are causing any harm at all.

Worse, the true effects of the gas leak are still unknown. No stop for the leak has yet been found and while the Southern California Gas Company scrambles to manage a fix, toxic gases are being carried miles away. Given enough time, Porter Ranch will merely be the starting point of a wider Los Angeles disaster. The alarming scale of this gas blowout highlights the importance of transparency, which Southern California Gas has so far failed to provide.
